Other Certificates and Courses:
SINGING & PLAYING:
SINGING:
-
Centrum's
Bud Shank Jazz Workshop, a week-long jazz workshop.
(I did vocal jazz.)
-
I sang
an original
at (or adjacent to) the Port Townsend Jazz Festival called —
"What do we have?",
an original song that I composed while at TRW in Ohio. (This was also like a recital,
connected to that year's Centrum's jazz workshop.)
-
South Sound Jazz Camp, held at Pacific Lutheran University,
a week-long jazz camp. My part included vocal training, some Jazz theory, and a performance.
Another link.
-
I sang at the S. Sound Jazz Camp
("recital")
"Stella by Starlight".
-
Choirs:
•
Choir of the Sound (COTS) (related to SC College (SCC)).
•
Concert Choir (part of SC College).
Five quarters in both of these.
(These were called then MUS 141, and MUS 141A which was later MUS 142. And then the first one was renamed; and both were renumbered.)
•
Shoreline Jazz Choir (held at SC College).
•
At the UW: University
Singers (two quarters).
•
In high school, a morning choir practice (Freshman year).
•
And, hanging out in my Mom's multiple choirs (when I was a child).
-
Classes:
•
At SC College (SCC):
A voice class (one quarter) and Voice-Dance Performance Techniques (one quarter).
•
At the UW:
Voice classes (two quarters).
For the SCC Voice-Dance class, I sang & danced to "Misty".
-
Voice lessons: Through SCC –
from Fredrick Lokken, DMA UW, Choral Conducting. I don't recall the
piece, maybe "Lasciatemi morire!", by Monteverdi, which means "Let me die!"
-
I sang and played the top part of the cadenza of an original
—
"An S.A.D. Medley", or similar title — at my final quarter
of second-year music theory recital, SCC. Main piano
parts played by Dr. Nancy Matesky, an instructor at SCC at the time.
After the recital, one person, Gino Carter, ran up to me, and said that he
thought it was the best (his favorite?) performance that night. Part One
of the medley was called "S.A.D." Final Quarter of Year 2 of Music Theory.
-
Another played an original of mine —
"S.A.D." — at an SCC recital, my first quarter of second-year music theory. Autumn Quarter.
This was played by Dr. Gloria Swisher, an instructor at SCC at the time.
A girl I knew, Miss Janeen Helton (who like to be called Jeannie), heard the
instrumental S.A.D. in the SCC studio. She said it was the "most
beautiful song" she had ever heard (the year it was composed and first recorded).
(To date, as of 2022, S.A.D. is still instrumental.) Years later, in reference to S.A.D., my mom said — almost to herself, I think —
"I love that tune/song"! (We were at her previous house, near her piano.)
-
Another played an original of mine —
"Metanoia" (a Greek word that means repentance) — at an SCC recital, my second
quarter of second-year music theory.
This was played by Dr. Gloria Swisher, an instructor at SCC at the time. Winter Quarter.
-
Another played an original of mine —
"Terra Coda" (which means something like End of the World. I don't recall why I named it this; but the phrase sounded cool at the time — at
an SCC recital, my first third-quarter of second-year music theory.
This was played by Dr. Gloria Swisher, an instructor at SCC at the time. Spring Quarter.
-
I sang and played two original songs (back when I was overly religious--I am not anymore!) —
"Praise the LORD, O my soul",
*OR*
it may have been called "Praise YaHWeH, O my soul",
*AND*
it may someday be called "Praise YaHWaH, O my soul"!
The other song was called
"SONG? ***". I have forgotten what song this was.
These were played and sung at Overlake Christian Church, College-Age Group (when I was kinda religious).
-
I recited an original poem (when I was overly religious) called "The Master's Hand", at a retreat connected with Overlake
Christian Church, College-Age Group. (I began by singing the first few
words of a cute commercial, to break the feelings that can come when one is
introduced with "... will do a poem". At that they laughed and cheered.
I think it was, "My baloney has a first name...".) After the poem –
delivered slowly, line by line – some people told me that they thought it was
great. And one person, Jessica ***, said she thought it was the best
poem she had ever heard. (And no, she was apparently not interested in me!)
-
I sang at a few karaoke locations. (One time was at a COTS
function or retreat.) Dates?
-
I sang at a "piano bar" on Aurora (near 205th, in Seattle). Miss
Carol Steinberg, an acquaintance, sang there as well. I forget what I sang,
possibly "Misty".
PLAYING —
- Class-guitar classes: High school (one
class, circa Senior year), and at SCC (non-credit).
-
Piano lessons:
School
• UW (one class, I think)
• SCC (two quarters).
Private
• Don't recall
Grade, from a woman Dad "found" (I don't recall whether or not I had more than
one lesson or not).
• About Eight Grade (?) from Victor Smiley (just a few
lessons: "Just for crying out loud" was one piece I recall playing for this, I
think).
• About Second Grade, I think; but perhaps for sure in 4th Grade from Sister Margaret Mary (spelling?). (I don't recall how many lessons.) I think it was connected to this that I played in a "recital".
I played "***" (some sort of cute song, perhaps called "Little Indian Boy" or "The Indian Song").
-
Piano Performances:
• Some performances may be
found under PLAYING,
Piano lessons.
• See also SINGING.
MUSIC COMPOSITION:
-
Music for an independent film:
The film, "Satchel
of Broken Toys", written, directed, and produced by Conan Crawford, used
music composed by me on November 30 of that year. It was a strange, goofy,
artist-being-found story. To find my contribution hiding somewhere
among the various credits: At the Home page, click on "Meet Ralph Crickle".
Then at the top of that page is a drop down menu that says "Marbles".
Under that menu, click on "Soundtrack". I was listed there. (Gorneth
D'Oyley was listed under "Meet Ralph", then "Credits".)
-
Dozens of hours of recordings of my original
compositions! since about the age of 18-22; though some compositions were as early as about age 11. For about 3-4 years, I
recorded over 30 CD-Rs of original material (direct to CD-R). And before that, I had recorded maybe 40 hours of original material to cassettes (multitrack and non-), to DAT, and to reel-to-reel multitrack.
-
Music theory at SC College and at the University of Washington (UW).
-
Music composition class for non-majors at the UW.
-
Modern arranging class at
SCC.
-
Film scoring courses for non-majors through different programs.

- Mechanics of Video Editing (5 weeks?, Video Workshop
in Kirkland, WA, then perhaps changed names). Spring of that year.
- Shoot
Video Like a Pro (5 weeks,
Video Workshop).
- Basic Television Studio Production
(Autumn/Fall quarter of that year).

choreograph and put on a performance. It was fun.
Fun (or torture)
—
• High school dances.
• Wedding(s).
• Swing, at the Lake City Elks, Seattle, WA, with Lynn
Offutt.
• Salsa, etc., at Beso del Sol, in Wallingford, Seattle, WA.
My mom and sister went, and so did Jos.
- Acting, Voiceovers, Drama, Directing, Sound Production:
Lessons
—
At SCC: Children's Drama, audit. Age 20.
Private class lessons: From Pat French. Voiceovers 1.
Voiceovers 2? *** Your Critic. Acting 1? Etc.
Miscellaneous
—
• Somewhere in the University District of Seattle: I got
together with some people to do a play, but it never flew. Don't recall
the play's name, or the author, or the director, or the year!
• At SCC: I
directed a video for a class project. It was an interview of an actor (by
another actor). In the middle, they switched places and roles. I had
a crew, provided by class members. I had to find the talent, write the
script, do CG (and any potential background audio) for the video, and then
direct others in the making of it, in the short space of less than one hour.
Talent: Gorneth D'Oyley and Ms. Carol DeSalles
(for the Basic TV Studio Production course).
• At SCC: I did sound production for a college
Multimedia course project called "World of Dinosaurs" (LINK to the 50MB
file played only on a certain operating system).
- Many more classes: Includes many more college and
university courses as well.
